Our Lesson of the Week, I’m from Canada in the Present Simple Dialogues 1 section of the Conversation Station, is a great follow-up from last week’s practice on the simple present. Students can improve their speaking, reading, listening, and grammar skills with this short exercise.

Another benefit of this lesson is that students will learn what a typical getting-to-know you conversation sounds like in English. Since it’s still the back-to-school month for many students, getting to know more about their new classmates will help them feel more comfortable.

As teachers, we always want our students to be able to work well together and be comfortable speaking to each other, and our guided conversation does just that.

After reading through this lesson as-is on the first round with a partner, students can then swap in their own information to make the dialogue more “real” to them. They can also switch partners a few times until they’re able to do the dialogue without looking at their paper.

You can even choose to have pairs present their dialogues to the class after a bit of practice, with or without their copy of the lesson.

Because this dialogue’s topic is about countries, you can easily begin or follow up with a fun activity about country names, nationalities, etc. Check out our many colorful maps in the Lists, Tests, Charts, and Maps section of the Library section. Also check out our writer Tara Benwell’s fantastic blog post Things to Do with a Map for seven ways to use a map in your classroom. You can use one of these activities as a warm-up for this lesson!
