Lesson of the Week: TV Boy – Simple Present Reading

This week’s featured lesson is TV Boy from the Present Simple Stories section in the Library. This four-page lesson includes a short reading that uses simple present verbs. There are comprehension questions to ensure that students understand the reading and a word scramble to practice new vocabulary. Because the reading focuses on likes and dislikes, there is a grammar review section that gives many examples of the “like” + infinitive verb construction. Students can practice this structure with the included speaking and writing exercises.
Best of all, our readings in the Library section include a digital component, including audio of the reading and online multiple choice comprehension questions with instant answer correction. This gives teachers a lot of flexibility on how to present the reading. You can do the print lesson in class, then assign the digital lesson for homework as review. Alternatively, you could assign the digital lesson for homework, and read the print reading aloud as a class the next day. Our digital lessons are designed in a way that are engaging for young learners. Kids will have fun reading, listening, and answering questions on their own for homework or in class using classroom computers.
Most kids love TV, so this lesson will seamlessly lead to discussions or activities about their favorite shows. If you have a multi-cultural class, you could discuss how shows vary around the world. You could also continue the like/dislike practice the next day with activities such as Bingo or Find Someone Who. See this week’s blog post, Teaching the Simple Present, for more information and ideas!
