This week’s Spotlight feature is from our Discovery Center, and it’s all about Food Allergies. Are you doing a unit on Food in your classroom this year? You’ll probably want to teach your students some songs to help them learn all of the basic vocabulary. I’m sure you’ll also read some stories and play some games. Here are some fun and educational videos you may want to use during your unit on Food.
1. Do You Like Broccoli Ice Cream? (song)
Introduce how to express food preferences.
Do you like…? Yes I do. No I don’t.
2. Food Group Fun (song)
Review the food groups in an active way. Get up and dance!
3. Food Allergy Club (story)
Introduce the concept of food allergies. Audio is in easy English.
Pre-teach the word “cross-contaminated”.
4. Vitamins (rhymes)
Teach what the different vitamins do.
Pre-teach the word “run down”: experiencing a reduction in energy.
5. Apples and Bananas (song with lyrics)
Review vowel sounds. Make silly nonsense words by changing the vowel sounds in them.
Make sure students know that these aren’t real words.
6. Food Chant (chant)
Review food vocabulary with example sentences. Listen and repeat.
7. Meals (story)
Listen to a story about meals and routines.
(No need to show the video. Just play the audio to the story, and ask comprehension questions.)
8. I Am Thirsty (song)
Introduce the names of basic English beverages (tea, milk, coffee, juice).
Introduce elision: What do you wanna drink?
9. Let’s Make a Pizza (song)
Review food vocabulary. Introduce “put on” and “let’s” (let us).
10. Why Do I Have to Eat? (cartoon dialogue)
Review question formation with this cute cartoon Q and A between mom and child.
Bonus Video (The Hungry Games ~ Catching Fur | A Sesame Street parody)
Higher-level (older) learners who are familiar with the Hunger Games will appreciate this parody.

The broccoli ice-cream song -. What about adding hamburgers and custard?
Great songs – use them a lot!
Glad you like the songs! Hamburgers and custard…yummy.
Here is one of the best posts I’ve ever read about how to use songs in the classroom. Bookmark and share this one! http://www.teachthemenglish.com/2014/03/a-6-point-plan-for-using-any-song-in-a-language-lesson/
