Action Verbs: Phonics Lesson

What can you do? The Action Verbs lesson in our Phonics Cafe section gives students fun, engaging practice with the modals “can” and “can’t.”

This four-page phonics lesson starts with a colorful list of action verbs. The next task focuses on modals of ability. Pair students up so they can interview each other and practice saying what they can and can’t do. In the final activity, students can read two friends’ letters to each other. They can see modals and action verbs in context, followed by a personalized speaking activity. Get students to read the letters out loud in pairs for more pronunciation practice.
