Welcome, 2014! It’s the start of a new year, so what better time to discuss goals and resolutions with your young learners? Sprout English‘s lesson of the week is Andy, in the Simple Future Stories section of the Library. In this lesson, Andy is moving to Italy next year, so he decides to make three goals.
As a warm-up to this lesson, your students could discuss their personal or academic goals for 2014. For tips and ideas, see 6 Ways to Set Goals with ESL Students and Setting Goals. If you’re an ESL parent, try the tips in Starting the New Year Off on the Right Foot – 5 Tips for ESL Parents. Your students will naturally use the simple future to discuss their goals before doing the grammar practice in the lesson.
Follow this warm-up with our lesson of the week, Andy, which is available to our subscribers. It is available in both print and digital versions! This four-page lesson includes a short reading (audio included), comprehension questions, a crossword puzzle, and two grammar lesson on be going to + verb and want + infinitive verb. Now is a great time to expand on the simple future—try some of the resources in the list below!
Try wrapping up this lesson with a discussion on travel. Where in the world do your students want to go? Have them discuss and/or write out their travel goals in pairs or small groups.
