The Test – Simple Future Reading
Getting ready to go back to school? This week’s Spotlight lesson, The Test, features a dialogue between two friends about typical school subject: exams! It’s a great lesson to use at the beginning of a new school year. Students can practice the simple future using be + Ving and be going to + V, both of which are natural to use when planning out goals for the year.
This lesson includes a short reading, comprehension questions, a be going to grammar chart, sentence puzzles, and a group discussion activity.
All of the readings in our Library section have a digital component, so teachers and parents can choose how to present the reading and comprehension questions—either on paper or online!

Using Authentic Dialogues in the Classroom – An Interview with Sprout’s Editor
This week’s Spotlight features a lesson plan from our Conversation Station. This section is full of dialogues for English language learners to read, listen to, and practice.
It is useful for learners to practice conversations using ready-made dialogues, and it’s also useful to use authentic dialogues once in while. You can invite speakers into your classroom, or find authentic dialogues on podcasts and videos. We had our own dialogue at Red River Press this week, and we thought students and teachers might find a few different uses for it. Be sure to download the useful document that we are talking about!
What follows is a conversation I had with Red River Press’s editor, Tanya Trusler. You can play this listening file for your class, and see if they can understand the gist.

This one-page dialogue is the perfect way to review the simple present, present progressive, and simple past. All three tenses are used naturally in this conversation between a father and his daughter. The topic of a parent wanting a child to stop watching TV and go study is something kids can definitely relate to! (more…)
